Precise Coating Thickness Measurement Has Become Critical in Current Automotive Lighting and Exterior Component Manufacturing Quality Control
In today’s quality control processes for automotive lighting and exterior components, the accuracy of coating thickness measurement has emerged as a core determinant of product service life and performance. For instance, insufficient scratch-resistant hard-coating thickness on headlamp lenses leads to visible scratches within a short period—compromising light transmittance. Similarly, inadequate anti-fog coating thickness on the inner lens surface causes condensation under thermal gradients, obstructing the optical path. Moreover, longstanding challenges—including colored substrates (e.g., red taillight bases), curved surfaces (e.g., bumpers), and low optical contrast between polycarbonate substrates and coatings—have significantly degraded the measurement accuracy of conventional thin-film thickness gauges.
To address this industry-wide challenge, Jingyi Optoelectronics has launched the FILMTHICK-C10 Series Thin-Film Thickness Analyzer. Leveraging its proprietary spectral fitting algorithm and flexible detection architecture, this instrument effectively overcomes measurement difficulties posed by complex geometries and low-contrast coatings—delivering a highly reliable solution for thin-film thickness quality control across automotive components and multiple other industries.
The FILMTHICK-C10 employs a broad-spectrum detection range of 400–1000 nm, accommodating spectral acquisition requirements for most organic and inorganic coatings. Its integrated flexible fiber-optic probe eliminates the need for fixed sample stages, conforming seamlessly to surfaces of arbitrary curvature. The minimum detectable spot size is reduced to under 200 μm, substantially minimizing signal interference from backside reflections on curved parts. Powered by Jingyi’s in-house thick-film fitting algorithm, the system automatically adapts to complex measurement scenarios—including colored substrates, interfacial diffusion layers, and textured surfaces—eliminating the need for manual parameter tuning. New operators can independently conduct measurements after only 10 minutes of training.
During real-world production-line validation tests, the FILMTHICK-C10 has successfully adapted to a wide variety of automotive components:
- For painted bumpers with hard-coat top layers, the instrument simultaneously calculates both the top hard-coat thickness and underlying primer thickness—and identifies parameters of the interfacial diffusion layer—providing critical data to verify coating adhesion;
- For transparent headlamp lens hard-coatings, measurement precision reaches 0.01 nm, with overall measurement error maintained below ±0.2%, enabling direct correlation between thickness data and lens transmittance quality specifications;
- For textured red taillight covers, the built-in colored-substrate calibration module filters out spectral interference from the colored coating, ensuring stable output of hard-coat and primer thickness values;
- For fog-resistant interior coatings on lamps without primer, the system detects interface adhesion layers as thin as 70 nm—enabling rapid assessment of coating adhesion efficacy at the production line. Each measurement takes less than 100 ms, fully meeting high-throughput quality control demands.
Beyond automotive applications, the Jingyi Optoelectronics FILMTHICK-C10 extends its versatility across multiple advanced technology sectors:
- In semiconductors: supports thickness measurement of photoresists, dielectric films, and process films on silicon, silicon carbide (SiC), and gallium arsenide (GaAs) wafers;
- In display manufacturing: enables precise thickness control of OLED panels, polyimide (PI) films, and ITO conductive layers;
- In optical coatings: accommodates measurement requirements for eyewear HC hard coatings, AR anti-reflective layers, AG anti-glare coatings, and optical filters;
- In biomedical applications: capable of measuring parylene coatings and biological membranes;
- And for general-purpose consumer films: including PET films and AR films.
As domestic high-precision manufacturing continues to raise quality control standards, demand for domestically produced, high-accuracy thin-film thickness measurement equipment is steadily increasing. Jingyi Optoelectronics remains committed to continuous innovation and iterative advancement in thin-film metrology—providing robust technical support to elevate quality assurance across diverse industries.
