Integrating Sphere Light Source: Ultra-Uniform, Professional Calibration Light Source

2026-04-22

Have you ever wondered why remote sensing satellite data acquired in orbit can accurately reflect vegetation growth patterns and pollutant dispersion ranges? Or why smartphones and digital cameras—across different production batches—consistently reproduce colors with remarkable fidelity? The answer lies in a critical calibration component essential to all such optoelectronic devices: the optical power integrating sphere source.

For a long time, calibration in the optoelectronic testing field has been hampered by insufficient light-field uniformity. If a calibration source itself exhibits brightness non-uniformity (e.g., hotspots or dark zones), systematic errors inevitably propagate into the final calibration results—ranging from subtle color shifts in consumer-grade cameras to severe distortions in remote sensing satellite observations. To directly address this industry-wide challenge, Jingyi Optoelectronics has launched the JY-JFIOS150 Universal Optical Power Integrating Sphere Uniform Source—a solution engineered from the ground up to resolve the uniformity challenge inherent in small-aperture output.

The working principle of this optical power integrating sphere is analogous to feeding chaotic incident light into a spherical “light-homogenizing maze” lined with ultra-high-diffuse-reflectance coating. Upon entering the sphere cavity, light undergoes dozens of random, diffuse reflections off the inner walls. As a result, originally non-uniform and directionally disordered light is thoroughly scrambled and homogenized—eventually emerging from the output port as a highly uniform, spatially stable light field with negligible intensity variation. The JY-JFIOS150 achieves an output uniformity exceeding 98%, surpassing the industry standard of 95% by three percentage points—and thereby reducing overall system calibration error by approximately 60%.

Specifically designed for calibrating miniature imaging modules and small-format sensors, the JY-JFIOS150 features a standard 5-mm-diameter output aperture, with light emitted horizontally along the sphere’s central axis—enabling seamless integration into compact, space-constrained calibration stations. It comes equipped with a 55-W halogen lamp as standard, yet supports easy replacement with customized LED or xenon lamps to meet diverse spectral requirements across applications. Optional flange interfaces are also available for direct coupling with various calibration instruments—eliminating the need for costly workstation modifications and enabling rapid deployment.

This exceptional light uniformity and long-term stability stem primarily from the sphere’s proprietary modified high-diffuse-reflectance coating. Jingyi Optoelectronics employs a composite PTFE-based coating whose reflectance remains consistently above 98% across the full spectral range—from ultraviolet (UV) through visible to infrared (IR). Crucially, it exhibits no yellowing, powder shedding, or reflectance degradation over extended use—delivering a service life several times longer than conventional coatings.

Today, high-power integrating sphere sources like the JY-JFIOS150 serve a broad spectrum of calibration needs:
- In consumer electronics: spectral response testing of CMOS/CCD sensors; flat-field correction, linearity calibration, and dark-noise evaluation of cameras;
- In aerospace: spectral response calibration reference for spaceborne remote sensing systems—ensuring observational data accuracy and reliability;
- In industrial security: sensitivity calibration for night-vision systems and high-sensitivity surveillance cameras; and as a primary radiometric traceability standard for radiance and irradiance measurement instruments.

To guarantee global recognition and acceptance of calibration results, the JY-JFIOS150 conforms fully—through design, manufacturing, and testing—to major domestic and international optoelectronic testing standards. Its calibration data is directly admissible as official evidence for product compliance verification.

As emerging fields—including AI-powered vision systems, autonomous vehicle perception cameras, and portable spectrometers—continue their rapid expansion, demand for compact, ultra-uniform, application-specific integrating sphere sources keeps rising steadily. Jingyi Optoelectronics is actively advancing related technologies, developing next-generation integrating sphere calibration solutions tailored to increasingly specialized application scenarios—providing robust, foundational performance assurance for optoelectronic devices across the entire industry.
